SALT LAKE CITY — A new Utah law that went into effect in May of last year allows participating pharmacies to prescribe patients birth control under something called a "standing order."

While anti-abortion measures in the recent legislative session spurred emotional debate, attracted lots of media coverage and in the last week drew a legal challenge, lawmakers took other, mostly-under-the-radar actions that could result in hundreds fewer abortions in the state.

A new program seeks to improve and expand contraceptive choices while helping providers overcome biases they may have toward patients.

University of Utah Health has launched a statewide contraceptive training and education program for medical providers in the state who deliver reproductive services to patients who are Medicaid-insured or uninsured.

University of Utah Health today announced the creation of Family Planning Elevated (FPE), a statewide contraception initiative. Funded in part by a generous $4 million grant from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, as well as a $1 million grant from the Dr. Ezekiel R. and Edna Wattis Dumke Foundation, FPE will provide cash grants, education and hands-on training to community health organizations that deliver reproductive health services to Medicaid-eligible and uninsured Utahns.
